A new trend is being seen in the UK as the summer heat progresses, with the length of men’s shorts rising with the temperature. In July alone, the demand for shorts that sit above the middle of the thigh rose by 156%, according to high street sales data.
Fashion experts have attributed the new trend to famous faces sporting the style, including football star Cristiano Ronaldo and One Direction member Louis Tomlinson. Fashion designers have jumped on the short shorts bandwagon, with Dolce & Gabbana and Versace just two examples of international designers that included men’s shorts in their catwalk runs.
Ed Watson, spokesman for UK superstore Debenham’s, claimed that the new fashion has taken the previous trend of ‘mankles’ – where the trousers sit just above the ankle – to a whole new level. According to Watson, the last time men’s shorts were this high was back in the 1980’s when Wham thrilled the world by exposing their hairy thighs.
